In the historic center of Trakai, the Trakai Castle Mound, under the control of the Trakai District Municipal Council, rises 17 meters and covers a 39,000-square-meter protected area. Dating back to the medieval period, the Trakai Castle Mound is considered one of Lithuania’s national treasures and has intrigued archaeologists for decades. Excavations in 1854 by Eustachius Tiškevičius uncovered 7 artifacts and the outline of a stone slab that marks the mound's edges. In the 1960s, Adolfas Tautavičius investigated deeper, unearthing 582 square meters of land beneath the mound. Although some remains of the original walls still resist the passage of time, the identities of those buried within the mound remain a mystery. Visiting the Trakai Castle Mound, this unique archaeological site, is a must for anyone captivated by ancient relics and Lithuanian history.
