The Sea Mother's Cave

The Sea Mother's Cave

In 1691, it was described as, 'in the mountain there is a large hole called the Frustugan', according to legend, the reason for the name was that the Sea-wife lived there. This giant cauldron from prehistoric times was transformed in 1890 into a cave by the sculptor Helmer Löfgren, the oldest of the three legendary Sandhamnsbrothers. He had a roof built and furnished the cave, among other things, with a sculpture he called the 'Sea-wife'. Löfgren wrote about this in his brochure About the Sea-wife's cave: 'In 1890 in the autumn, I came home from a study trip to Germany, and as I was in need of work, I decided to restore the cave for display. I dug, built a roof and decorated it, modeled the Sea-wife or the spirit of the sea, which rests from its play, and sculpted a few other figments of the imagination.’

The sculpture is no longer there but the giant cauldron can still be seen, although some of the mountain roof has broken and fallen.
