Switzerland Villa

A Daring Swiss Villa Overlooking an Abandoned Iron Mine

This villa in Swiss style was built during the 1880s.

The reason the style is called Swiss style is that the original idea was taken from the rural wooden houses in Switzerland, with decoratively formed wooden details, often visible timber and pitched roofs with markedly protruding eaves. This style is called 'cottage style' or 'Swiss chalet style' in English.

The reason Switzerland's rural buildings were used as a model for other countries' architecture is certainly connected to Rousseauism, which persisted. The end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century brought an increased appreciation and feeling for the Swiss landscape. Switzerland also represented liberty and democratic ideals, as well as a natural way of life.

The 'authentic' Swiss style is rarely seen in Sweden.
