First mentioned in 1091, Taufers Castle in the municipality of Sand in Taufers, South Tyrol, is one of the oldest castles in Italy. The castle's unique design, boasting a star shape, is one of its most striking features. Visitors can explore the fortress today and see the well-preserved castle complex, characterized by rubble stone (opus spicatum).
Out of the 64 rooms, around two dozen have been carpeted and are accessible during a guided tour. The frescoes in the castle chapel, from the School of Friedrich Pacher, are particularly noteworthy. Taufers Castle not only showcases the region's rich history, but also has a place in film history, serving as a set for several movies, including 'The Red Violin', 'King Laurin', and 'Dance of the Vampires' by Roman Polański.
