The Prigione di Palazzo: From a Palace to a Prison

Discover how a once- grand Renaissance palace in Ferrara transformed into a prison in 1852, and now serves as a museum showcasing the city's rich history.

The Prigione di Palazzo, situated on Corso Ercole I d'Este in Ferrara, Emilia Romagna, Italy, was designed by Biagio Rossetti in 1493-1498 as part of Ercole I's plan to modernize his city, the Addizione Erculea. The palace, built in the Renaissance style, features a marble portal, balcony, and pilasters. However, in 1852, it was repurposed as a jail, known as the Prigione di Palazzo. Today, it is Ferrara's museum, offering a glimpse into the city's history.
