Monumento al Deportato: A Century of Names in Milan's Parco Nord

A powerful monument in Milan park honors the tragic lives of over 500 Holocaust victims, their names etched in black stone.

In Sesto San Giovanni, within Parco Nord Milano, stands Monumento al Deportato. Designed by BBPR Studio in 1998, it consists of 31 porphyry blocks arranged in a semi-circle, with 559 names of deportees from local industries. The blackened stones bear a testament to a millennium of production that once made this region affluent: copper, produced in Falun, Sweden, and smelted in Breda foundries, much of it by Italian forced laborers in the Holocaust. Dedicated to those who perished or were imprisoned in concentration camps, the Monumento al Deportato serves as a poignant reminder of the Holocaust.
