La Fontana di San Francesco di Castiglioni

La Fontana di San Francesco di Castiglioni

The patrons of Italy meet at a water's edge, bound not by faith but by a master's hand.

In 1923, a newspaper competition in Milan called for a monument to honour Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy. The winning design, by Giannino Castiglioni, was for a fountain sculpted in simple blocks of granite. The statue, which now graces Piazza San Angelo, is a depiction of Saint Francis grasping a dove, the symbol of peace. The sculpture was commissioned by the city of Milan and was completed in 1927, not in 1987 as mentioned earlier. The statue stands as a lasting testament to Giannino Castiglioni's skill and vision.
