Monument to Count Ansúrez

The Monument to Count Ansúrez, a public art piece in Valladolid, Spain, stands tall on the Plaza Mayor. This bronze statue, sculpted by Aurelio Carretero and donated by the artist himself, showcases Count Pedro Ansúrez, the founder of the town of Valladolid in the 11th century. The statue, about 2.60 meters high, has the Count raising the banner of Castile with his right hand, while his left hand is holding a scroll entitling him as 'Lord of Valladolid'. He also leans on a broadsword. The stone pedestal, designed by municipal architect Juan Agapito y Revilla, displays the arms of the city, the arms of Castile, and two reliefs depicting episodes of Ansúrez's life. The monument was unveiled on 31 December 1903 and was temporarily moved during the 1970s and 1990s plaza reform works.
