14th-16th Century Cistercian Monastery of Santa María de Matallana

The monastery of Santa María de Matallana is an ancient Cistercian monastery located in Villalba de los Alcores, in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y León, Spain. Founded in 1185 under the leadership of Tello Pérez de Meneses and his wife Guntroda García, with the authorization of King Alfonso VIII of Castilla, the construction of the monastery began in the 14th century and was completed in the 16th century. During the Romería, the monastery served as a hospital for employees of the Canal de Castilla. When it was abandoned in the 19th century, it was demolished. However, it was declared a Monumento Nacional in 1931. Today, the remains of the Iglesia and the still visible walls of the claustro are evidence of the rich architectural history of the monastery of Santa María de Matallana.
