Masterna: Pine-carved Masters in Masthuggstorget, Gothenburg

Masterna is a pine-carved sculpture situated in the heart of Masthuggstorget, Gothenburg, Sweden. The sculpture, which stands as a tribute to the Masthammar along the southern älvstrand, consists of seven masters around the central one. It was created in 1971 by Erling Torkelsen, who poured more than three years of work into it. One of the carvings bears an inscription: ‘Masthugget was mentioned in 1647. Masthuggare worked here for 200 years.’ Erling Torkelsen carved these masterpieces in 1971.
