The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal commemorative obelisk, erected in 1850, is an 8-foot tall marble obelisk in Washington, D.C. that marks the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to Cumberland, Maryland in 1850. It stands on the northwest corner of the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge over the canal in Washington's Georgetown neighborhood. The monument is inscribed on all four sides. The northeast side reads 'CHESAPEAKE & OHIO CANAL./ Commenced at Georgetown./ July 4TH 1828./ Chief Engineer / BENJAMIN WRIGHT.' The northwest side reads 'CHESAPEAKE & OHIO CANAL./ COMPLETED TO CUMBERLAND./ OCTR. 10TH 1850./ CHIEF ENGINEER/ CHARLES B. FISK.' The southeast side mentions the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company, its president James M. Coale, and several directors while the southwest side names Maryland state agents. The obelisk was restored in 2005.
