Monument aux morts italiens de Lyon

A marble statue by Vincenzo Pasquali commemorates Italian soldiers who died in Lyon's ambulances during the war of 1914-1918.

Located in the nouveau cimetière de la Guillotière in Lyon, France, the monument aux morts italiens de Lyon was inaugurated on 24.1925 by Édouard Herriot. This memorial commemorates Italian military dead during the war of 1914-1918 and is the property of Italy, much like the nearby Italian square which groups 81 tombs of Italian soldiers.

The work is by the Italian sculptor Vincenzo Pasquali, who manufactured it in San Remo before it was transported to Lyon. The monument is situated in a 300 m2 square conceded in perpetuity to the Italian government. The main inscription reads: „ICI REPOSENT LES SOLDATS DE LA NATION ITALIENNE ALLIÉE MORTS DANS LES AMBULANCES LYONNAISES PENDANT LA GUERRE DE 1914-1918 - DANS UN TERRAIN CONCÉDÉ À PERPÉTUITÉ PAR LA VILLE DE LYON”.

The statue of the Grande Madre is sculpted from Carrara marble and weighs more than 12 tons. The monument was first entered on the title of historical monuments in 2019 and then classified by decree on December 28, 2021.
