The Last Giant in Des Moines: The Southeast Water Trough

In Des Moines, Iowa, stands a giant from the past – one of just 15 survivors out of 15, a nostalgic journey back to the horse-and-buggy era, before indoor taps took over

Erected in 1906, this 6-foot giant, the Southeast Water Trough, resides in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa. It's the 15th National Humane Alliance fountain to arrive here. Its rectangular shaft rests within a 6-foot basin. Four small cups beneath quench the thirst of miniature townsfolk. Nestled upon a mosaic base, it symbolizes the horse-and-buggy era and community gatherings before the rise of indoor plumbing. In 1976, it took its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
