In the heart of Des Moines, stands the Hotel Kirkwood, a historic building originally constructed in 1930. Located on Walnut Street, it served as a neighbor to Union Station and the Rock Island Depot and was part of the city's "Hotel Row." Designed by the Chicago architectural firm H.L. Stevens and Company, the building marked the emergence of the skyscraper hotel in downtown Des Moines.
The 12-story brick structure rises to a height of 133 feet and features Art Deco details in its massing, sleek exterior geometrical detailing, and treatment of the cornice. Upon its completion, it became the largest hotel along Fourth Street between Walnut Street and Court Avenue. It replaced a previous Hotel Kirkwood, which was built on the same site in 1862.
Developed by E.F. Tagney and S.F. McGinn, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The building has subsequently been converted into an apartment building called "The Kirkwood."
