Gustav II Adolf’s brazen ride

On Gustav Adolfs Square, Stockholm, the equestrian statue of Gustav II Adolf is dressed in medieval armour and sits on horseback. It was the first king’s statue outdoors in Sweden, commissioned by the Royal Court and funded by public funds and a special lottery. The statue was completed in 1791, but it was inaugurated on 17 November 1796, which corresponded to 6 November according to the Julian calendar. Today, four portrait medallions display the king's four commanders in the Thirty Years’ War.
