In the 1920s, Rolf de Maré founded the Dance Museum, initially located in the basement of the Royal Swedish Opera, marking a turning point in the world of dance. The museum expanded in 1953, and its collection originally belonged to de Maré. A unique aspect of the museum is its library, endowed by Carina Ari in 1969, housing the most comprehensive archive of literature on dance in Northern Europe. Interestingly, the museum receives no state funds. As of 2023, the director of the museum is Hans Öjmyr.
