Engelsberg Ironworks: The best-preserved Swedish ironworks

Engelsberg Ironworks, located in Fagersta Municipality, Västmanland County, Sweden, is a significant site of industrial heritage. The history of iron production in the region dates back to at least the 13th century, when local peasants mined ore and produced iron using primitive furnaces. In the 14th century, a German woman named Englika began producing iron in Engelsberg, for which the ironworks is named.

The mill, known as Engelsbergs bruk, was built in 1681 by the county sheriff Per Larsson Höök. By this time, ironworking had already been carried out on the site for a long time by miners. Following its construction, more modern production methods were introduced in Engelsberg, and production volumes increased substantially in the following decades.

The preserved buildings include a manor house, the inspector's house, and the smelting house with a blast furnace. Because of its production of superior grades of iron, Sweden became a leader in this field during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Engelsberg Ironworks is the best-preserved and most complete example of this type of Swedish ironworks. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1993.
