Journey Through Time: Westfield's Majestic Mechanic Street Cemetery

Step into Westfield, Massachusetts' charming Mechanic Street Cemetery, a timeless treasure dating back to 1677.

Entering Westfield, Massachusetts' Mechanic Street Cemetery, a four-acre sanctuary in its heart, is a magical journey back through time. Established in 1677, shortly after the city's settlement in 1669, it's the city's oldest burial ground, holding the stories of generations of its residents since its inception. The earliest inscription found speaks from 1683. For countless centuries, it served as a burial ground, ceasing in the late 1800s, even though no burials were recorded during the 20th century.

It was honored with a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.*/br>*The cemetery's layout, with headstones primarily facing east, mirrors the traditional 17th and 18th-century style. Over the years, many early settlers and prominent Westfield residents have found their peaceful resting place here. In 1827, the cemetery expanded to serve Westfield's burgeoning population.*/br>*In 1842, Westfield opened the Pine Hill Cemetery, nestled at the city's outskirts.

Burials in the Old Burying Ground continued until approximately 1875, at which point they became sparse. The entrance gate was added in 1894, and by 1912, the cemetery was resting amidst Westfield's developing cityscape. Sadly, periodic inventories from the 20th century have revealed losses and damage to headstones, largely due to vandalism and the unstoppable effects of weather.
