Diverso Tempore Diversa Fata: The Rantzau Monument's Twisted Memory

In the Platsarna district of Varberg, Sweden, you’ll find Rantzauklippan, once known as Daniels klippa, a cliff that overlooks Simstadion, the strandpromenade, and the old stone quarry now converted into a park. Positioned strategically near Varbergs slott, the fortress, Rantzauklippan has been used for deploying artillery during sieges of the fortress, most notably during Varbergs erövring 1565 and Varbergs kapitulation 1569. These events were significant moments in the ongoing battle between the Swedes and the Danes for control of the fortress.

But Rantzauklippan holds a more unusual story. It was here, on 11 November 1569, that Danish general Daniel Rantzau died during the Swedish siege of Varbergs slott. In memory of Rantzau, a monument, Rantzaumonumentet, was erected on the cliff’s top. The monument, unveiled on 26 June 1938 during a ceremony that was attended by representatives from both the Swedish and Danish royal families, as well as both countries’ military forces, features a bronze relief of Rantzau and the Latin inscription Diverso tempore diversa fata, now correctly in quotation marks: 'Skilda öden vid skilda tider', or 'Different fates at different times'.

An interesting detail is that the newer inscription at Rantzaumonumentet includes the name Daniel Rantzow spelled with a 'z', whereas the older inscription at the base of the monument uses an 's'.
