John Killmaster's Color Splash: A Giant Playset in Portland, Oregon

Think of it like a supersized kids' building block set, bursting with bold, candy-like hues. This magnificently colorful creation calls Portland home.

Debuting in 1977, this masterpiece called 'Untitled' by the American artist John Killmaster is a colossal, chromatic spectacle, nestled at the crossing of Southwest 5th Avenue and Southwest Pine Street in Portland, Oregon. This magnificent piece of art is a prized possession of the City of Portland and Multnomah County Public Art Collection, generously sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council. For years, this artwork has been a vivid outdoor showcase of Killmaster's enamel artwork wizardry, boasting eye-catching porcelain panels smothered in a riot of vibrant colors.

Portland native Sybilla Avery Cook once likened the city tour to discovering a supersized kids' playset due to the sculpture's attention-grabbing, crayon-like shades. At first, this project was supported by TriMet and the United States Department of Transportation. However, in 1993, it faced a bit of a pickle when it was identified as being in poor condition within the Smithsonian Institution’s Save Outdoor Sculpture! program.
