Château de Barbaste in Lot-et-Garonne

The history of the Château de Barbaste, a manor castle built in the 17th century.

The Château de Barbaste is a castle located on place de la poste in Barbaste, Lot-et-Garonne. It was built in the first half of the 17th century, possibly for Carbon du Faulong, who served as the hunt intendant for the King of Navarre Henri III and commanded the towers of Barbaste in 1588.

The castle was divided into two properties in 1841. The southern part was given to the bureau de bienfaisance de Barbaste in 1879 and currently houses the post office. In 1933, the northern part of the castle burned down.

Two wings of dependencies, perpendicular to the main building and forming a U-shaped courtyard to the west as seen on the 1837 cadastre, were destroyed. The Château de Barbaste was listed as a historic monument on September 12, 1977.
