Castell d'Espinalbet: A Medieval Fortress Tower Repurposed

Castellar del Riu (Berguedà) is home to a national cultural heritage in Spain: the Castell d’Espinalbet. The remains of the Castell d’Espinalbet consist of some rows of what was a square plan building built directly over the rock. The remains of what was likely a tower, used for defense, can be seen on the hill that dominates the valley. The stone of the tower, it seems, was probably used for the construction of nearby houses and the rectoria of Sant Vicenç. In 1187, Castell d’Espinalbet is mentioned in the testament of Trobador Guillem de Berguedà as one of the properties bequeathed to his brother Berenguer.
