Castell de Centelles: A Turon Overlook in Catalonia's History

Atop the turon called agulla de Sant Martí, the Castell de Centelles stands as a monument to Spain's turbulent history. Traced back to 898, it began under the dominion of the counts of Osona. During its lifetime, it sheltered the powerful Centelles family, providing a base for their extensive baronia, encompassing the modern municipalities of Balenyà, Centelles, Sant Martí de Centelles, and Sant Quirze Safaja.

Throughout the years, the castle has witnessed numerous wars. King Pere el Cerimoniós chose Gilabert de Centelles as his majordom. The castle bore witness to the War of the Catalan Civil War in 1464, French troops in 1809 during the Peninsular War, and more. By the early 15th century, the Centelles family had moved to another estate, leaving the castle abandoned and looted. Today, the castle ruins serve as a testament to a bygone era, tucked away in the Catalan hills.
