Bramafam Fort: Protecting the Rails of the Alps Cozie

The only hilltop fort with cannons overlooking the valleys, Bramafam Fort was built to safeguard Italy's new railways.

Bramafam Fort, situated in Val di Susa, close to Bardonecchia, Italy, was erected between 1874 and 1877. Its construction was mandated to secure the recently established rail line to Modane and the Frejus rail tunnel. The fort overlooks Bardonecchia and the valleys of Rho and Frejus. Almost six thousand square meters of the fort have been excavated and renovated, showcasing exhibits in the officer's quarters, soldier's quarters, atrium, guardhouse, caponier, and one turret.
