asymmetrical church in the Reno Valley

A Finnish chapel along the Reno River

Santa Maria Assunta is, at first glance, like the many other churches in Italy. But look closer and you will find that it is not like the others. It is the only ecclesiastical building in Italy designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, and the only Catholic one among the seven churches he designed. Aalto completed it in 1978, one of his very few major works in Italy. It is noteworthy for its asymmetrical nave, curved reinforced-concrete structural frames, controlled natural lighting, and relationship with the landscape of the Reno River. The church is considered one of the most important examples of contemporary religious art and modern sacred architecture in Italy, a testament to Aalto's skill and vision.
