Perched on a hill on the western shore of Lake Ančys in the Lazdijai district, lies Mėčiūnų piliakalnis. The hillfort features a rectangular court measuring 25x16 m, which is 1 m higher at its southern end. The surrounding slopes rise between 15 and 25 meters high, and the site is surrounded by pine trees.
In 1965, the hillfort was surveyed by the Institute of History, though no fortification traces or cultural layers were observed. In 2001, Eugenijus Ivanauskas investigated an 8 m² area and detected a hearth and the cultural layer of an earlier settlement containing stone tools.
Dated to the 1st millennium, the site was recognized as a state-protected monument by an order from the Minister of Culture in 2005. The monument territory covers an area of 15,700 m².
