Tomboy, one of the highest ghost towns in the United States, is nestled in Colorado’s San Miguel County. Originally known as 'Savage Basin Camp', it boomed around the Tomboy Mine, which unveiled gold in 1894. By 1897, the mine moved hands for $2 million to London investors. In its glory days, Tomboy had a general store, school, stable, and cabins for miners. It had an unusual touch for an 1800s mining town, boasting a YMCA and tennis courts. The mine carried on until 1928, with mining tasks in the tunnel lasting until 1978. All that remains of Tomboy can still be discovered by hikers or four-wheel drive vehicles, though it now sits on privately owned land.
