A Toe-Tickling Statue: John Harvard's Lucky Foot in Harvard Yard

Rub John Harvard's bronze foot for a dose of university luck on your visit to Harvard Yard. This statue, an iconic representation of the Harvard founder, has been flattering visitors for over a century.

John Harvard is a 1884 bronze statue by Daniel Chester French at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It pays tribute to clergyman John Harvard (1607–1638), whose substantial deathbed bequest to the ‘schoale or Colledge’ recently undertaken by the Massachusetts Bay Colony was so gratefully received that the Colony resolved ‘that the Colledge agreed upon formerly to bee built at Cambridg shalbee called Harvard Colledge.’

Since there was nothing to suggest what John Harvard looked like, French drew inspiration from a Harvard student who was collaterally descended from an early Harvard president.
