Known as Iron Mike, a duplicate of The Hiker statue, crafted by Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson in 1906, stands tall before the hearts of 50 American soldiers in various cities across the country. Born as a memorial to University of Minnesota students who fought in the Spanish–American War, Iron Mike became one of at least 50 replicas produced by the Gorham Manufacturing Company after 1921. Initial installations commonly occurred in the Northeast, while subsequent stemmed from post-War II often found in the South and West.
Cleansed of its parade attire and military gear, Iron Mike soars 9 feet high atop a 6-foot granite base. The statues, scattered throughout the United States over the years, often face studies about air pollution, and their backstories often remain unnoticed. Curiously, the missing muzzle of the original Iron Mike earned it the name 'Iron Mike,' sparking speculation about its potential theft or containment.
