Nestled at 430 Oak Grove Street, this beautiful relic of the past has been reborn as a haven for 75 residents, moving far from its former life as the Northwestern National Life Insurance Company headquarters. Constructed in 1924 by the architecture firm of Hewitt and Brown, this majestic Beaux-Arts building showcases a robust reinforced concrete structure that stands tall and proud, having withstood the test of time. As you enter 430 Oak Grove, you'll be captivated by the grandeur of a Palladian loggia, a design feature that whispers of the 1920s elegance.
Loring Park graces its north side, while residential buildings surround it to the south, St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral stands to the west, and the Woman's Club of Minneapolis to the east. The building's exterior, a mesmerizing blend of gray Bedford limestone and brick, stands as a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the past. The Northwestern National Life Insurance Company Home Office, now known as 430 Oak Grove, was once a significant center of commerce in Minnesota.
Founded in 1885, the company grew and evolved, undergoing several name changes before becoming the Northwestern National Life Insurance Company in 1901. That year, the company's president, William Frank Bechtel, merged the Northwestern Life Association and the National Mutual Life Association. The company thrived, outgrowing its previous quarters, and in 1920, it purchased three lots near Loring Park to create a new home.
Hewitt and Brown, entrusted with the task of designing the building, delivered creative solutions like the terrace and the loggia to address the grade of the site. The company's growth accelerated during and after World War II, filling the building to capacity by 1946. The company continued to expand, and by December 1964, the staff had employees scattered across five locations. In 1964, the company relocated its headquarters to the Northwestern National Life Building in the Gateway District, and the Loring Park building was renamed the Loring Park Office Building in 1966.
In 1977, the artist Prince recorded The Loring Park Sessions in the manager's office located on the first floor. In 2011, Kraus Anderson spent 20 million dollars converting the building from offices into luxury apartments, which opened in 2012. With a rich history and a modern sheen, 430 Oak Grove invites you to embark on a journey back in time and experience the elegance of the past up close.
