A Little Stroll with Old Dodge: The Unquiet Bronze Venture

Alight, mate. Drop a few quid in the tin and snuggle in for a right old yarn about a bloke with a bronzed heart who can't even keep his boots in the same spot for more than a few decades.

William E. Dodge, a sprightly entrepreneur, finds himself immortalised by a tanned statue that spins yarns like a modern-day minstrel. Commissioned by Dodge's mates and investors, the sculpture raised its curtain on October 22, 1885, right in the heart of Herald Square. This strolling Joe, however, wasn't meant to just rub shoulders with Herald's crowd. In 1941, the statue found itself with a longing gaze in Bryant Park, starting a joke that made more sense as time went on, with the statue standing as stoic as ever, a reminder of days from a bygone era. A 1992 facelift by the Bryant Park Restoration Corporation freshened the sculpture, but the classic elegance of its former self still sparkles in its new playground.
