Monument to Columbus in Valladolid: Red-painted Controversy

The Monument to Columbus, in Valladolid, Spain, was a controversial statue to the explorer from the moment it was conceived for the 400th anniversary of 1492. Spanish artist Antonio Susillo designed the bronze statue with reliefs of four key events in Columbus' life. However, the statue faced vandalism and controversy since it was installed in Valladolid in 1905. Standing 16.4 meters high and weighing 7,000 kg, the monument's kneeling figure of Columbus is atop it. Despite the attempt by a left-wing and Castilian nationalist youth organization to deface it in 2019 with red paint and the graffiti reading 'españolismo es fascismo', the monument remains a part of Valladolid’s historic city center.
