The Town Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina, isn't your typical community cinematium. Layered in bricks in 1924, it was one of the originals in the United States. Its unadorned, two-story central arched window and brick facade bring an intriguing, humdrum appearance. The neighborhood bears no resemblance to Art Deco. However, the 1950s brick extension at the rear multiplies the riddle. Don't let its guileless exterior deceive you; it's bewildered onlookers since 1974, securing a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Never forget: squint carefully.
