A monument to a forgotten general in Barcelona

Destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1938, a monument to General Prim, a significant figure of 19th-century Spanish politics and military, was rebuilt in 1948.

The monument to General Joan Prim is located in Ciutadella Park near the entrance to Barcelona Zoo. Constructed by engineer Josep Fontseré i Mestre, the son of architect Josep Fontserè, in 1887, the statue was created by sculptor Lluís Puiggener. The monument commemorates Prim, born in Reus in 1814, who rose to prominence as a military and political figure in the Spanish government. Best known for expelling general Espartero from Spain and suppressing the popular rebellion of la Jamancia, Prim was eventually assassinated in Madrid in 1870. The original statue was destroyed in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War by Joventuts Llibertàries de Gràcia, a group associated with the FAI. The statue was rebuilt in 1948 based on a model of the original by sculptor Frederic Marès.
