In the heart of 1863, the flames of the Railway Revolution burst forth in Grinnell, Iowa, with the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad taking root. A humble frame depot marked the start of a journey that would transform in 1872, as the Central Railroad of Iowa joined Grinnell, knitting together two noble rail lines. By 1893, the original station, a gift from the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, brimmed with the excitement of bustling crowds, feeling a bit snug.
This inspired the creation of a new, grand brick edifice, designed by the Rock Island Lines and brought to life by local artisans. This striking one-story, square-shaped structure had a tender round tower gracing its intersection with the tracks, granting the stationmaster a fabulous vista of the world outside. From 1893 onwards, the station pulsed to the rhythm of the CRI&P's Corn Belt Rocket and the Rocky Mountain Rocket passenger lines. In May 1970, the gentle echoes of these historical trains tenderly vanished, signaling the end of service.
Today, this magnificent building stands tall and inviting, transformed into a beloved restaurant, offering an enchanting peek into its exceptional past.
