Situated on the Utah State Hospital campus in the heart of Provo, Utah, you'll find an old-school amphitheater that dates back to the Great Depression. This Government-aided recreation center sprawls over 3 acres and can pack a whopping 800 folks into its grand auditorium and ancillary rooms. Yet, today, what's left is but the recreation center itself. But there's a haunting tale behind this place – for approximately three hip-swinging decades from 1971 to 1997, it served as the nerve center for Provo's annual Haunted Castle during the lively Halloween season. Now, it resides proudly on the National Register of Historic Places, making it more than just an old building – it's a jeesh-worthy snapshot of the era of New Deal programs that bore fruit during those tumultuous economic times.
