The Obdurate Remnant: The Magnificent Gate of Mérantais

A 17th-century hunting gate, summoned for a grand sum of one single celebration, persists as a monumental relic of opulent architecture. What lies concealed beneath its grandeur?

The Gate of Mérantais, one of the 24 gates adorning the wall of Louis XIV's Grand Parc, was erected in the year 1684. Its structure echoes that of its kin, all the works of Jules Hardouin-Mansart. It presents a grand gate cochère next to the lodgings of the guard. Previously, it was one of the principal gates to the south of the Grand Parc's wall, leading to the Mérantais domain, later dubbed 'Solitude of Mérantais' in the 17th century. Today, the splendor of the gate can still be perceived along the Departmental Route 36.
