25 Years Chasing Cruelty: R.D. Whitehead, Milwaukee's Dogged Investigator

Discover the life of R.D. Whitehead, the man who pursued animal abuse for 25 years, and left us a quirky Milwaukee Landmark.

From 1879 to 1906, R.D. Whitehead worked 25 years for the Wisconsin Humane Society, wrapping up over 700 cases. After his passing, he honored his furry friends with the R.D. Whitehead Monument in 1910, originally a horse trough, now a fountain since 1966. Sculpted by Norwegian-American artist Sigvald Asbjornsen, it showcases a dog and horse in profile. The monument bears the inscription 'Dandy George' and has stood as a Milwaukee Landmark since 1974.
