War memorial in Gallargues-le-Montueux, France

The Mother and Child sculpture at the memorial is a poignant tribute to the loss and sorrow experienced by families during the war. Standing in the heart of a small village, this memorial honors the 54 soldiers who died in the First World War and the 3 who died in the Second World War. The memorial, commonly known as the 'Gallargues-le-Montueux war memorial', was built in 1923, commissioned by the commune after the First World War, and designed by architect Paul Chabert and sculptor Paul Landowski.

The sculpture is a high-relief image of a mother mourning her lost son, a powerful representation of the tragedy of war. The memorial is a square pedestal supporting an obelisk, with the Mother and Child sculpture gracing the top. The names of the fallen soldiers are inscribed on the sides of the obelisk. The first delivery of the statue in 1923 revealed a crack-like fissure, but this issue was eventually resolved in 1929. The memorial was inscribed as a historical monument in October 2018.
