A Neoclassical Nugget Named Villa Bagatti-Valsecchi on Via Vittorio Emanuele

Peek under the neoclassical veneer of number 48 on Via Vittorio Emanuele Secondo, Varedo, and you'll uncover a swashbuckling saga. From its monastic origins to the distinguished Bagatti clan who gentrified it, this hideaway is a shining jewel in Lombard architecture.

Villa Bagatti-Valsecchi, a come-hither of Italian villas, was initially a humble cascina, or farmstead, before the Bagatti family, in flight from a plague-stricken Milan, claimed it as their new residence in 1523, right here in Varedo. Fast forward to 1884, the year the Villa Bagatti-Valsecchi we admire today was given a face-lift by the deft hand of architect G. Moretti, who skillfully preserved remnants of the villa's past while infusing it with a distinctively Italian zest (Moretti, G, 1894, 'L'Edilizia moderna').
