In the heart of Cordoba, the Triunfo de San Rafael stands proudly. This monument, erected in 1736, is dedicated to the archangel San Rafael, the guardian angel of the city. The sculpture was created by the little-known artist Juan Jiménez, who placed the statue atop four slender white columns.
The base of the work, executed by the stonemason Alonso Pérez, is crafted from black marble with golden inscriptions. Above the pedestal, the columns support the cimacio with a cloud where the golden image of San Rafael rests.
The entire work was funded by alms gathered by the priest Juan de Santiago, of the Compañía de Jesús. Historically, the triumph was protected by a fence and illuminated by oil lamps, before the fence was removed in the mid-20th century.
