Ulvsunda Castle: A Medieval Fortress Transformed into a Modern Hotel

Ulvsunda Castle, commissioned by Field Marshal Lennart Torstenson in the 17th century, was shaped by generations of the Åkerhielm family before becoming a luxurious hotel. Gustaf Åkerhielm, Prime Minister of Sweden, used it as a summer residence. When he retired, his heirs sold the property in 1902. But the city of Stockholm still coveted Ulvsunda’s thick walls and bought it the same year for a mere 300,000 kronor. Today the castle is a hotel and conference facility, though the current appearance dates from the 1830s.
