L’Estel ferit, roughly translated to 'The Wounded Star', is a ten-meter-tall sculpture on Barcelona’s Sant Miquel beach. Far from a mere ornament, this piece by German artist Rebecca Horn is an homage to the traditional beach shacks that were a part of Barceloneta’s landscape before the 1992 Olympics. These shacks, colloquially known as 'guinguetes', were destroyed to make way for a modernized seafront. L’Estel ferit stands not just as a work of contemporary art but as a memorial to the old Barcelona that was so swiftly replaced by the polished version presented to the world during the Olympic Games.
