Crescendo appare is an art installation on Barcelona's Moll de la Barceloneta by Italian artist Mario Merz. Originally inaugurated in 1992, Crescendo appare is part of the Configuracions Urbanes exhibition, a project envisioned to showcase eight works created by seven foreign artists and one Spanish artist, including a Catalan. The project was directed by critic of art Gloria Moure. Crescendo appare consists of 21 caligraphic neon numbers embedded in iron squares set on the ground, stretching along 160 meters.
The sequence forms a visual representation of the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence that describes a pattern of growth found in nature. Each number in the sequence is the sum of the two preceding numbers, starting with the sequence 0 and 1. Since its first day, it has faced problems with vehicle passage and the placement of circ carpets over it. In 2004, the entire installation underwent renovation, with new numbers, a new electrical installation, drainage to prevent water accumulation, and thicker glass. However, the piece still breaks often, requiring recurring maintenance.
