The Punta Abona Lighthouse is situated between Abades and Poris de Abona in the municipality of Arico. It stands on a rocky headland on the south-east side of Tenerife, positioned between the Punta de Anaga Lighthouse to the north and the Punta Rasca Lighthouse of Arona to the south. The lighthouse is maintained by the port authority of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and serves as an active navigation aid.
The current structure is a 39 m high cylinder-shaped tower, painted white with red bands, supporting twin galleries and a lantern with a black cupola. It entered service in 1976 and was built next to the original lighthouse. With a focal height of 54 m above sea level, the light can be seen for 17 nautical miles. Its light characteristic consists of three flashes of white light every twenty seconds.
The site originally hosted a white-washed single-storey building completed in 1902 as part of the first maritime lighting plan for the Canary Islands. That original structure featured dark volcanic rock masonry and contained living quarters, a warehouse, and an office. It remained in service until it was replaced by the modern tower in the 1970s. In 2003, the old building was partially restored through a training programme for unemployed youths.
