The Sunken SS Monarch of Isle Royale (1890-1906)

In 1890, the unlucky SS Monarch began its journey, meeting an icy end in Lake Superior's grasp off Isle Royale in 1906 – never to be seen again

The SS Monarch, a freighting vessel born in 1890, met its unfortunate fate in icy waters near Isle Royale's shores in 1906. It now rests at the bottom of Lake Superior, cargo and all. Most of its career was spent carting passengers and goods between Sarnia, Thunder Bay, and Duluth. In a chilly December of 1906, it ran aground off Blake Point on Isle Royale. Before you could blink, the ship sank. Salvage attempts were made, but the SS Monarch had no interest in being recovered. Since then, its wreckage and cargo remain at the lake's base. In 2009, curious divers made 85 dives to the wreck, keen to explore this ill-fated ship.
