Perched atop Feldtmann Ridge in Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, the New Fire Tower stands 41 feet (12.5 meters) tall. Its steel scaffold clears the treetops, offering unobstructed panoramic vistas across the southwest quadrant of the island. Construction began in 1964 as a response to the Greenstone Ridge Fire, a 1936 blaze that destroyed 20% of the vegetation within the park. Using designs from the 1954 Forest Service specifications, the National Park Service (NPS) built the structure as part of their Mission 66 program. The New Fire Tower features an Oldborne Fire Finder, a sophisticated alidade for accurate spotting of fires across its 360-degree vistas from the steel cab elevated above the treeline.
