Once a towering titan of the seas, Chester A. Congdon, constructed in 1907 by the Chicago Shipbuilding Company, sank into the icy depths on the 6th of November, 1918. For three days prior, the crew's logs indicate they'd gone without food. Serving diligently for the Holmes Steamship Company until 1911, it then switched hands to the Acme Transit Company. In 1912, it was rechristened Chester A. Congdon, under the Continental Steamship Company – a nod to its influential leader. This vessel was the first iron-hulled ship on the Great Lakes. Off Isle Royale and Lake Superior, its ghostly figure still lingers, a stark reminder of a time gone by.
