Nestled in the charming village of Suffern, New York, you'll find the Washington Avenue Soldier's Monument and Triangle. The heart of the monument harbors a 45-caliber French cannon, which strutted its stuff on Long Island during the American Revolutionary War of 1777. After the dust had settled, the cannon found a second life as an improvised cannonball storage for local folk. Fast forward to 1921, and our gallant French friend was erected on the Triangle, becoming part of a war memorial honoring the heroes who fought in World War I. A Doughboy statue, representing a typical foot soldier, was also added to the monument. quite the journey for a cannon, don't you think?
