The Dreamy Sleeping Sentinel of Pretoria: Untouched by Battle's Fury

Beyond the city's edges, a slumbering giant named Fort Schanskop once stood, sleeping serenely, waiting for the battle's call it never received.

On the outskirts of Pretoria, a forgotten treasure slumbered - (Fort Schanskop), whose modern fortifications and five-sided bastions whispered of a time past, constructed to shield the city from the relentless reach of Johannesburg and Lourenco Marques. In the year of 1897, this fortress was brought to life by the dreams of a Boer commander, Danie Theron, a hero of the Anglo-Boer War, who sought to protect his city with grand design. By Pretoria's side, Fort Schanskop was one of four forts charmingly stationed to guard against any hiding dangers.

However, this slumbering sentinel remained oblivious to the clash of swords and guns. This dreamlike state endured, until the year of 1938, when it was declared a historical monument, its slumber interrupted for the world to see. From the cold whisper of 1972 until the warm embrace of 1994, the fort served as a museum, a gallery of photographs recalling the various facets of the Anglo-Boer War. On the icy night of December 16, 1993, on the eve of the talebook election of 1994, a sudden commotion awoke the slumbering fort.

The Pretoria Boer Commando, led by the dreamy-eyed Commander Willem Ratte, seized the fort, though the dance of details from this event remain a secret and veiled in mystery.
